Central Air Conditioning System Installation. What Does Central AC Cost?

There are several factors that determine what your new or replacement HVAC system might cost. Depending on whether you need an entirely new system or just duct work, here are just a couple of the questions to consider.

Size & Capacity

A larger space requires a larger AC unit with greater cooling capacity—and that comes with a greater cost. Expect to pay more for a larger cooling area. With that in mind, consider if you have to cool your entire home. For example, a basement may stay cool all summer long, with or without AC. If you don’t have to count that space in your cooling costs, don’t.

Life Expectancy

Some HVAC systems can last for 10 to 15 years with proper maintenance. Some can last up to 20. The useful life of your system is a major factor in determining the lowest overall cost for your particular situation. Your Airflow technician will help you evaluate the best option for you.

Efficiency

To get the most energy efficient HVAC systems for your particular needs, an understanding of the efficiency ratings used in the industry is helpful. There are five ratings to understand before making a decision to purchase any type of HVAC equipment. Your Airflow technician will review these ratings with you for any system you are considering.  They are:

Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER)

A measure of the cooling power of an air conditioning system per unit of power consumed. EER is meant to give consumers an idea of the cooling power to expect from an AC for every dollar spent on electricity.

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER)

Whereas EER measures energy efficiency of the air conditioning system on the hottest day of the season, SEER gives the average efficiency for the whole season. Air conditioners can have SEER ratings ranging from 13 to 22, the higher number being the most energy efficient device.

Energy Star

An efficiency rating devised by the EPA. Tests are conducted to determine the performance and energy efficiency of Energy Star compliant HVAC systems. Energy Star ratings are designed to contribute to individual and nationwide energy savings. While slightly more expensive, the price difference can easily be recovered in energy savings realized over time.

Heating Seasonal Factor Performance (HSFP)

This rating measures the efficiency of the heating element of a heat pump.

Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV)

MERV is a rating for air filters in HVAC systems. Filters with smaller openings are condiered more efficient. The rating goes from 1 to 16, with the higher number being the most efficient.

Maintenance Plans

Some systems come complete with ongoing maintenance plans. Like efficient systems, these systems tend to cost more upfront but can curb ongoing or long-term costs down the road. Weigh your options and determine if this is a solid add-on for you.

Time of Year

The time of year does not affect the cost of central air conditioner systems as much as potentially higher labor costs can occur during peak demand seasons.  It is also more difficult to get immediate installation service during the peak summer or winter seasons.

Do you already have a central air or heating system?

Many central air conditioning systems use the furnace blower to distribute cool air through the home. If you do not have a central heating system installed, it is cost-effective to install a heating and air conditioning (HVAC) system at the same time. If you already have central heat, you may can use the existing fans and duct system for the central air system depending on compatibility.

How many BTUs will you need?

A BTU is British Thermal Unit. It is the measurement used to measure heating and air conditioning units in BTU/hour. This is the capacity per hour of the HVAC system to heat or cool your home. The amount of BTU’s you will need is a function of the area in square feet to be cooled. Your Airflow A/C & Heating professional will discuss the optimum output for your particular residence or business.

Comfort and Control

Looking for pinpoint control of the heating or cooling needs throughout your home or office? Ask us about American Standard's Zone Control technology with home automation hub to remotely control your home, comfort, and energy use. This incredible technology lets you access your HVAC system from a smartphone, tablet or computer, allowing you to adjust the temperature remotely.

HVAC Ducting

Although most new homes have ducts and vents already in place, many older homes have old convection heating systems or baseboard heaters without ducts. In such cases, you will need to install ducting and vents to provide the air conditioning with a flow system. This would be the time to explore upgrading the existing heating system as well as it will be much less expensive to do together.

If only a section of your HVAC system needs ducting repair, it is generally possible to do so. However, if your HVAC ducting is worn due to age, it may be necessary to replace the ducting or the entire system, especially if it is as old as the ducting.

Call us to arrange an assessment of your ducting to see if it can be repaired or needs replacement.
